Shir o Shakar
The Persian words 'shir o shakar" mean "milk and sugar". Smooth milk, bumpy sugar. This is a description of the texture of the fabric seersucker. It was originally worn by the workingman, but then became a fabric of the upper class. Up North, it is not supposed to be worn before the last Monday in May. I saw someone wearing it on May 8th. Fashion Faux Pas! I was kind of enough not to point this out to the gentleman for fear of retaliation or worse. The U.S. Senate, that venerable hive of do-gooders, had, can you believe it, a Seersucker Thursday. Thanks, Trent Lott. We'll all come down to your Mississippi gulf home dressed head to toe in seersucker, oh wait...your house isn't there anymore. Sorry Trent, you are probably living displaced somewhere like Cohoes, NY.
"Yeah, Im sharp
I'm really, really sharp
I sure do earn my pay
Sitting on the beach every day, yeah
Im real real sharp, yes I am
I got a corvette and a seersucker suit
Yes I have"
